4 Ways To Shine On Your First Day On The Job

It’s human nature to want to make a great impression on the first day of a new job, you want to exude dependability, preparedness,  you also want to be polite, well groomed and above all, liked.

It’s also human nature for new co-workers and colleagues to form perceptions about the “type” of person you are based on initial impressions.  This makes your job a lot harder.  These snap judgments can turn into long-term perceptions that may impact your career trajectory, and ultimately success, at an organization.

That’s good news for people who make a positive impression. But if you make a negative first impression, it could haunt you — and your career — for a long time.  Here are some tips to follow to make your first day a little easier on you.  Remember – don’t put too much pressure on yourself, relax, be yourself and try to have fun.

Arrive Early

If you start at 8am get there at 730 – find out where you’ll be sitting get all your stuff setup. This may sound pointless however this becomes even more important in the winter when you have all your winter clothes to deal with.  You can’t lose taking the time to arrive early and get yourself setup – this also shows commitment on your part.

Arriving early gives you a chance to be somewhat familiar with your surroundings and you may even be able to make some small talk with co-workers before the pressure of the workday starts.

Bring your own lunch

Bring something easy from home to eat. You don’t want to be looking for and trying new food places on your first day and risk being late coming back.  Bring your own lunch and observe how a normal lunch period would go and also look around for places to eat for future reference.

Break out your best outfit… on the second day

It’s important to look your best.   Spice up your appearance with a sharp outfit while staying within the company’s guidelines.

However if you really want to make a statement, bring your A game outfit on the second day.  By dressing well but normally on the first day you have set yourself up for the opportunity to wow everyone on the second day with a killer outfit.   Show them your not just a one trick pony.

Socialize

It’s important to maintain a good relationship with your managers but also focus on making some connections with your fellow employees.  Get to know them and have them show you the ropes around the place so that you feel more comfortable

Avoid sensitive topics like religion, abortion or sex.  Keep conversation light and friendly, this may be hard for opinionated people but do your best to be respectful of all views.  It’s easier to catch flies with honey than vinegar.

One key topic to avoid is office politics.  It is a horrible habit to be talking about other coworkers especially when you’re new to the team.  Talking down on office policies or processes is something that happens with time however this is a topic you need to stay away from.  Learning how to redirect questions in social situations is a good skill for these situations.

Get a good night sleep before your big day.  There are lots of things to keep in mind when trying to make a good impression but it’s most important that you are relaxed.  Give yourself ample time to get ready, review tips and tricks to help you out beforehand & remember that any work you put in to getting ready for the position will pay off!
