Make sure you create an email address that sounds professional. Usually just using your first and last name is fine. For those that are uncomfortable with that perhaps use your initials.

It is important to realize this email address is one of the first impressions that an employer has of you. Pick out an address that’s simple and that doesn’t have too many numbers in. You don’t want an opportunity to go away just because you’re using an old email address that sounds silly.

Another important thing to note is how you answer the phone. Instead of “hey” answer in a professional and friendly manner. People may be surprised at this greeting but they will also be impressed. Also change your voice mail to something semi-professional. Even if you’re not looking for a professional job, potential employers will be impressed with you manners.

If money is an important issue when looking for a job, you may have to bite the bullet and get a position you don’t really want. Something to cover you while you’re looking for longer term employment. Tend bars or wait tables while looking for a position in your desired field. Don’t feel ashamed or let pride get in your way, successful people do what they have to in order to succeed.

During your interview please don’t lie. The interviewer may double-check what you say which can come back to haunt you. Be honest and prepare and you won’t feel the need to falsify information. Claiming to have work experience, skills or knowledge that you really don’t have can get you into trouble. Instead take the time and prepare so that you can excel at the interview.

Keep all these points in mind while looking for a job and never get discouraged when it starts getting hard.
